Shaw’s Cove Photoshoot Location Guide (Laguna Beach, CA)
If you want a small, tucked-away beach that feels more “locals only” than touristy, Shaw’s Cove is one of my favorite Laguna Beach options for family photography or maternity photos. It’s scenic, intimate, and gives you that classic rocky-cove look without a long hike.
You’ll get a hybrid gallery here. Classic portraits that look great on the wall, plus the “that’s so us” moments in between.
Warm, happy, and real, with just enough guidance to make it easy.
Why Shaw’s Cove Works So Well for Photos
Rocky cove vibe: textured cliffs, tidepool edges, and a beautiful shoreline backdrop.
More intimate than bigger beaches: it photographs “cleaner” fast when we time it right.
Short session footprint: we can keep everything close together, which is great with little kids.
Golden hour magic: warm light plus the shape of the cove = flattering and glowy.
Quick Details + Things to Know Before You Go
Address / access point: Stairs at Fairview St & Cliff Dr, Laguna Beach, CA 92651.
Best light: Golden hour is the easiest win.
Crowds: This is a smaller beach, so even a moderate crowd can feel “full.” Weekdays help.
Stairs: Expect a staircase down to the sand
Parking: Street parking in a residential area. Arrive early for the best chance at a close spot.
Restrooms: There are no facilities directly at Shaw’s Cove. Plan to use restrooms before you arrive.
Tides matter: This cove gets tight at higher tide. For tidepool-friendly space, we always want to work around the high tide.
Permit note: Laguna Beach requires a permit for professional still photography on City property (including beaches). Signature + Premium collections include the permit cost.

Best Time for a Shaw’s Cove Photoshoot
Golden hour is ideal for soft light and warm tones.
Because this is a small cove, tide level is a bigger deal here than at wider beaches. For the most shoreline space and tidepool-friendly access, plan around a low tide (2.5’ or lower).
If you tell me your preferred vibe (more beach, more rocks, more tidepool edges) I’ll recommend a time window that fits light + tide + crowd level.
What to Expect During Your Session at Shaw’s Cove
You don’t need to know how to pose. You don’t need your kids to “perform.” You just show up, and I’ll guide you.
Typical flow here:
Start with a few classic portraits while everyone’s fresh
Move into simple prompts (walking, snuggling, playful movement)
Use the rocky edges and shoreline for variety
Keep it moving so we stay ahead of crowds and shifting tide
Your gallery will include wall photos + “that’s so us” photos.
Shaw’s Cove Photos With Toddlers
Shaw’s Cove can be great with toddlers, but the key is keeping it simple:
fewer “stand here” moments
more movement prompts
quick resets as needed
staying close to our chosen area so it doesn’t feel like a trek
If your toddler is shy, loud, clingy, or having big feelings, it’s normal. We pivot and keep going.
What to Wear at Shaw’s Cove
This location photographs best with warm, coastal styling:
creams, tans, soft blues, muted greens
light textures (linen, knits, gauze)
outfits you can move in
Try to avoid neon colors and tiny busy patterns. They can fight the natural tones of the cove.
If you book Signature or Premium, you also get access to my Motherhood Wardrobe, which makes this part way easier.
Parking + Arrival Tips (Laguna Beach)
Street parking is the main variable here. Arrive early if you can, because it’s a residential area and close spots go fast.
Also, since there are no restrooms at the cove, plan that part before you park.
